Former Guard and his Employer receive a Dumb and Dumber Award

Perusing my daily Google Alerts in my email box, an article caught my attention as a scene from the movie “Dumb and Dumber”.

The article, which is actually a press release from the Orange County District Attorney’s office, is about the arrest of a former security guard, Robert Shorter, who worked at the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN). He is accused of stealing from the TBN donation box.

Robert Shorter - accused of allegedly stealing from TBN Donation box

Why I think this is a dumb and dumber episode? The security guard was fired and TBN never changed the access code to the gate which allowed the him to gain access to the property. Dumb! Even if the guard while employed and never was explicitly given the code, as a standard practice (i.e. protocol) TBN or a security supervisor should have changed the access code. Once inside he had a remote device to open the roll-top door to the gift shop where the donation box was stored. I have to ask how did he get the device? Was it given to him? The press release doesn’t specify, but my gut tells me the employer gave it to him for securing the door.

The press release goes on to state that the guard accessed the premises at least 9 times! Each of these 9 times was captured on surveillance video! Dumber! If you were part of a security guard service wouldn’t you know a)that there are surveillance cameras and b) the location of each of those cameras? On several of these occasions he was wearing a “God is Good” blue t-shirt. Not that I’m an expert but when you are trying to steal/rob a place I don’t think you’d want to wear anything recognizable. I guess this guy had no common sense at all or didn’t care.
